Over the past 6 years SA1 has proudly hosted a variety of prestigious community and public events.
The Great Wales Triathlon held in 2003 at SA1, a qualifier for the 2004 Olympics, drew competitors from all over the world. The event comprised of swimmers battling through the River Tawe, then onto the cycling phase along the streets of Swansea, concluding with a dramatic run around SA1 and over the Sail bridge to the finishing line.
In 2004 the first community event at SA1 celebrated the official opening of the sail bridge. The iconic sail bridge provided the community with a direct link to the City Centre providing a new route for pedestrians and cyclists. The event commenced with the arrival of Father Christmas speeding his way along the river Tawe on a powerboat to the cheers of the community spectators lining the newly opened bridge. The evening culminated in a spectacular fireworks display which illuminated Swansea bay.
The launch of the GSP partnership was marked in 2005 with a community Christmas extravaganza. Capitalising on the previous year’s success the Christmas event welcomed back Father Christmas on his powerboat and offered an array of entertainment including an ice rink, stilt walkers and children’s funfair. The highlight of the evening was the Christmas carol singing provided by children from schools from within the GSP community area.
The SA1 team launched the new gateway entrance in 2006 with a nautical theme! Opening with a spectacular lantern parade bringing together adults and children from across five areas of Swansea, the evening centred on the Prince of Wales Dock where pirates fought on a galleon. The evening closed with fireworks dramatically displayed over the dock water.
In 2007 and 2008 SA1 hosted the central hub of the World Rally Championship.
This high profile event saw the best rally drivers in the world descend upon SA1 to do battle in the Wales Rally GB.
SA1 was chosen as the location for the Service Park by Rally organizers International Motor Sports Ltd because of its proximity to the city centre and its stunning waterside location. SA1 offers the ability to add glamour and prestige to this world class event.
