To date, the Welsh Assembly Government has invested £50m in SA1, and the private sector £150m. It is expected that £400m of private sector funding will be invested into the 40 Hectares surrounding the 11 Hectares of the forthcoming 500 berth SA1 marina. This level of investment opens up huge opportunities for businesses in the region to supply goods and services to the development.
During the past 4 years the Welsh Assembly Government’s supplier initiative, SA1 Sourcing, has helped to maximise the potential benefits derived from this exciting development.
The local business community in South West Wales has benefited from the promotion of a local procurement philosophy and its advantages. Developers have embraced this philosophy and the task ahead is to continue working with developers, contractors, businesses and local suppliers to maximise the potential benefits.
The overarching aim of SA1 Sourcing is to maximise the opportunities for local suppliers to win business on the development. In addition to this the project aims to engage with local suppliers to promote opportunities, and provide advice on procurement requirements and the support available from the public sector. To date £32m of contracts have been secured by local businesses through assistance from this sourcing initiative.
Initially opportunities were centred on the construction phase and associated ground works but as the project is developing new opportunities are being presented ranging from furnishings and fittings to services and consumables.
